This sign stands on Tatham Gap Road as a reminder of the “Trail of Tears.” In 1838, the government began the Cherokee Indian Removal from Fort Montgomery in Robbinsville, across Tatham Gap to Fort Delaney in Andrews, to Fort Butler in Murphy. Then they marched the Cherokee to internment camps at Fort Cass in Tennessee to await deportation to Oklahoma. A sad period in U.S. history.
