Hiwassee Dam’s basketball teams participated in the round-robin Swain County Christmas Tournament last week, with the Lady Eagles coming away 2-1 but the boys not able to find their way to victory.

Murphy has a season average of making 57 percent of field goals, but in this game they were held to 30 percent. Union, also a good shooting team, only shot 37 percent.

Robbinsville – The Lady Black Knights were not prepared for what transpired on their home court Dec. 19.

The Southern Appalachian Bicycle Association and town started work in 2010 on Piney Knob Trails, located on 700-plus acres in the Murphy watershed on Fain Mountain, which has led to 13.5 miles of trails being open to the public. The entry road has also been paved, allowing easy access for more vehicles and helping grow the sport of mountain biking.

Bulldogs take down Wildcats

The Murphy wrestling team took down Andrews 48-18 on Dec. 12. Here are the winners, excluding forfeits.

April McNabb/Contributing Photographer The Hiwassee Dam basketball teams split with Murphy on Dec. 12. The Lady Eagles beat the Lady Bulldogs 67-40, while the boys team lost 75-66 in what people in the crowd called a great game.

The Eagles’ loss dropped their record down to 1-5. The win was the third in a row for the Bulldogs, bringing their record for this year to 3-0, after Murphy started later due to the football playoffs.

Asheville – The T.C. Roberson meet Saturday had 144 swimmers representing eight teams, five of which were in class 3A or higher.

Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown will be closed until the property is sold, but whether it remains a popular dirt track in 2024 and beyond will be up to the new owners.

Track owner Jack Wimpey passed away at the beginning of the 2023 season. He left the track to his children, who decided to sell the 30 acres with an asking $1.25 million.
