Andrews – The Andrews girls varsity basketball team picked up two wins and the boys earned one in a tough week for the Wildcats. Each team played three games in as many days.
The Lady Wildcats defeated 5A Franklin and Rosman, while the boys beat Rosman and fell to Franklin.
Both teams also fell to Cherokee to start the busy week.
Boys fall Cherokee
The Wildcats started their week with a 73-47 loss to Cherokee at home on Jan. 20.
The Braves took the lead in the opening quarter and maintained it the whole game. They took a 24-12 lead in the first quarter,
then added 23 more for the Cats to trail 47-23 at halftime.
Cherokee outscored Andrews 17-12 in the third quarter to lead 64-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
Despite the Cats outsourcing Cherokee 12-9 in the fourth quarter, the Braves won 73-47.
Gabe Clark and Braylen Maennle led the Cats with 13 points each.
Girls lose to Braves
It was a tough game for the Lady Wildcats on Jan. 20 as they hosted Cherokee. The Lady Cats lost 94-25.
The Lady Braves opened the game with 33 points in the first quarter as Andrews scored six.
Cherokee then added 29 points in the second quarter to lead 62-16 at halftime.
The Lady Braves continued to score double digit points in the second quarter as they won 94-25.
Knox Davis had 11 points and Drea Cutshaw had 10 points.
Boys host Franklin
In their second loss of the week, the Cats fell to 5A Franklin 81-46 on Jan. 21.
Both teams scored 13 points in the opening frame, but Franklin pulled away with 27 points in the second quarter.
Andrews trailed 40-24 at halftime.
Franklin continued to pull away in the second half as they scored 23 points in the third quarter and 18 more in the fourth. The Wildcats scored 11 points in both the third and fourth quarters as they fell 81-46.
Levi Clark led the Cats with 18 points and was the only Wildcat in double digit figures.
Girls down Panthers
When the Lady Wildcats and Panthers met earlier in the season, it took five quarters before the Wildcats got the win. This time around, it only took four.
The Lady Wildcats defeated Franklin for a second time this season with a 59-46 victory on Jan. 21.
With the win, the Lady Wildcats are in double digit wins on the year for the third straight season following six seasons of single digit wins.
Franklin took an early 12-10 lead in the game, but the Lady Cats stormed back in the second quarter.
With 24 points in the second quarter, the Lady Cats led 34-20 at halftime.
Franklin outscored Andrews 17-7 to get themselves back in the game.
Andrews took a 41-37 lead to the fourth quarter.
With a big fourth quarter, the Lady Cats dropped 18 points and held Franklin to only nine en route to their 59-46 victory.
Davis led the Lady Eagles with 21 points. Cutshaw was again in double digits with 15 points. Juliet Holloway and Marley Blackwell had nine points each.
Boys dominate Rosman
The Cats ended the week on a high note after two losses in two days. They wrapped up the week Thursday night with a 84-30 win over Rosman.
Andrews got off to a quick start with 29 points in the opening quarter. They followed it up with 21 more in the second quarter to lead 50-18 at halftime.
The second half started with a huge dunk from senior Logan Shuler as the Cats kept rolling.
They took a 35-point lead in the third quarter to trigger a running clock for the remainder of the game.
Andrews scored 21 points in the third quarter and 13 more in the fourth en route to their 84-30 win.
Levi Clark led the Cats again with 19 points against Rosman. Also in double digits were Maennle with 13, as well as Gabe Clark and Brady Queen with 11 points each.
Girls defeat Rosman
The Lady Cats made it two straight wins Thursday night as they defeated Rosman 61-19.
Andrews had 14 points in the opening quarter to lead 14-8 heading to the second quarter.
They pulled away in the second quarter to lead 34-15 at halftime.
With 24 points in the third quarter, the Lady Cats extended their lead to 58-19.
They closed out the game in the fourth quarter as they shutout Rosman to win 61-19.
Cutshaw led the Lady Cats with 21 points. Davis was also in double digits with 13 points.
Up next
The Wildcats will play a two-game slate against in-county opponents with both on the road.
First they will face Hiwassee Dam on Friday, then they will play Murphy on Tuesday.
They will then return home Wednesday to face Blue Ridge Early College to kick off a three-game home stretch.
For all three games, the girls will play at 6:30 p.m., with the boys to follow.
