Cats ready or SMC meet
The Andrews High School varsity indoor track team took the week to prepare for the Smoky Mountain Conference championship meet.
The meet is at 3 p.m. today in Cherokee.
Some Wildcat athletes to watch for at the conference meet and heading into Regionals include Caleb Helton, AJ Johnson, Logan Patrick and Isaac Patrick. Helton and Johnson have done well in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Logan Patrick has excelled at shot put and Isaac Patrick has done well in the 55-meter dash.
Lady Wildcat Natalie Garrett has done well at long jump and triple jump, while also competing in the 55m dash and shot put events.
BASKETBALL
Hawks fall to Basin
After the threat of winter weather late in the week, the Nantahala varsity basketball teams played a one-game week.
On Jan. 19, the Hawks hosted Copper Basin, Tenn., where Nantahala fell in both games.
Despite a late push, the boys lost 68-59 to the Cougars. Landon Neal led the scoring with 23 points and Samuel Bateman had 14 rebounds.
The Lady Hawks fell 84-19 to the Lady Cougars. Leading the Lady Hawks in scoring was Zoey Passmore with 13 points.
BASEBALL
Little league signups open
Registration is open for the Blue Ridge Mountain Little League 2026 season until Jan. 31.
T-ball, baseball and softball teams are available and are open to both boys and girls. A birth certificate is also required for registration.
Non-competitive T-ball and competitive T-ball for ages 3-6 is $48. Meanwhile, 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U baseball and softball is $88.
