Anngee Quinones-Belian/Staff Correspondent In 1976, President Jimmy Carter signed a bill making the third Friday in September as National POW/MIA Remembrance Day. American Legion Post 96 in Murphy conducted a brief ceremony on the square in downtown Murphy, joined by Cherokee County Commissioner Jan Griggs, Murphy Mayor Tim Radford and several other area residents. Next year, they hope to have the ceremony at Konehete Veterans Park.
