Shoe Fund needs help

As we approach the end of 2023, the economic climate and job market continues to make it difficult for families in our community to make ends meet. In addition to the unprecedented impact COVID-19 and inflation have had on all of us, parents struggle to take care of their kids’ school needs and, at times, come up short fulfilling all of them.

We receive calls daily from parents in our community requesting help.

We are requesting your assistance with the annual Cherokee County Shoe Fund drive to help provide the means for proper footwear for our community’s youth. Children are our future, and helping to provide basic necessities – such as shoes – is a rewarding way to support them.

Please make checks payable to: Cherokee County Shoe Fund, P.O. Box 279, Murphy, NC 28906.

On behalf of the children of Cherokee County, thank you in advance for your generous donations.

Steven Aft, Murphy

Group finding dogs new digs

This year has been busy for New Digs for Dogs.

Along with our own rescue and adoption efforts, we have continued to assist our local animal shelter run by the Valley River Humane Society. We completed a wish list with the assistance of donations made by individuals and businesses.

We would like to thank Granny’s Attic Thrift Store in Hayesville for awarding us a grant to purchase supplies to further enhance the shelter in 2024. Many thanks to Pat and Jeanette Kern for organizing two fundraisers; one at Victoria’s Attic in Blairsville, Ga., and the other at Hiawassee (Ga.) Antique Mall.

We completed storage locker shelving for the staff, painted the lobby, break room and office area. The bathroom was remodeled,  doors were fixed, work was done in the kennel area and we upgraded power for heat in the cat area. The lighting in the clinic and other areas was upgraded to LED lighting, the floor heat in the kennel area was repaired and much more.

New Digs for Dogs is proud to help the humane society in any way we can. The shelter’s staff works so hard to make the animals as comfortable as possible in their situation.

Our Christmas party this year was a success due to the dedicated New Digs for Dogs’ volunteers who help so diligently all year long, as well as the generosity of Susan and Kenny Hall, Trish Chapin, Prints Plus, Signs Fast II and special food from Kendra Martin.

During this holiday season, please keep our humane society in your thoughts. Remember to spay and neuter your pets, adopt from us and other local rescue groups. Keep your pets warm and safe, and identify your pets in the event they may get lost.

We are in need of transport drivers, and the shelter needs volunteers to assist with laundry, dog walkers, folks to socialize cats and dogs, and much more. The shelter is always in need of paper towels, bleach, heavy 33-gallon trash bags, non-scented, clumping cat litter and canned Purina or Sheba cat food.

The Valley River Humane Society’s animal shelter is at 7450 U.S. 19, Marble, NC 28905; call 828-837-2304.
