Protect our democracy

In reading Terry Payne’s letter to the editor, I can agree that many Americans “detest (President Donald Trump’s) mean tweets, arrogant and bully verbiage …” Why should they not detest this kind of behavior?

I look for steadfastness, inclusion, empathy and kindness, of which he is lacking. I also agree that, “Policy actions have a profound effect on our nation.”

People are opposed to Trump because he has no real policies. His speeches do not inspire trust, as they do not relate to policy or the business of running a country; rather, he spews random thoughts and personal complaints.

Here are some facts from PolitiFact Check: Trump created 5.2 million new jobs, compared to President Joe Biden’s 13 million new jobs. During Trump’s term, the economy lost 2.9 million jobs, and the unemployment rate increased to 6.3 percent. The U.S. trade deficit in goods and services in 2020 increased 40.5 percent from 2016. The number of people lacking health insurance rose by 3 million. The federal debt went from $14.4 trillion to $21.6 trillion. Home prices rose 27.5 percent.

What really concerns me is Trump’s association with the Conservative Political Action Conference. CPAC met and opened with these words:

“Welcome to the end of democracy. We are here to overthrow it completely. We didn’t get all the way there on Jan. 6, but we will endeavor to get rid of it and replace it with this right here.” (nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/jack-posobiec-jan-6-2024-cpac-rcna140225.)

Years after Biden won the 2020 election, Trump and his allies still insist – without evidence – that widespread voter fraud led to a stolen election. The Associated Press showed that is false, finding fewer than 475 instances out of more than 25 million votes cast.

So, no, I won’t support a liar, womanizer, convicted felon, sexual abuser, dictator lover, liar, verbal bully, fear-mongerer, hate-spreader and a fraud.

I’m voting Democrat to protect our democracy.

Keep things in the past

I recently moved to Murphy from Connecticut and immediately subscribed to the Cherokee Scout, as I really missed my daily newspaper. I especially enjoy Anngee Quinones-Belian’s “Time to Smile” and “The Road Less Traveled” columns, as well as the many articles regarding community events, clubs and social service agencies.

However, I was shocked to read the last items in “This Week in Local History,” as it contradicts the community-focused, uplifting nature of what I see elsewhere in this newspaper.

In the “25 years ago” section, the criminal charges of several (then) teenage and young adults were regurgitated for what, in my opinion, was the sake of filling space at the expense of individuals whose public records may have already been expunged. My heart breaks for these now 40-something people who have satisfied their debt to society or, as in many cases of youthful offenders, the charges were dismissed or cleared from their public record. Your restatement of the charges shows a lack of consideration for the hurtful impact this may have on their relationships with employers, children, family and friends.

Many young people make bad decisions; some are caught, others are not, but many move on to productive, healthy, happy lives. None of them deserve to have this information re-hashed years later for the purpose of filling space.

Reading about 25-year-old minor indiscretions that have no impact on today’s society provides no social benefit. Your reading public could learn significantly more of social value by reading about folks and their paths to individual success and happiness.

Please make an effort to find more suitable historical events for print and please take the time to review and question the quality of the information provided and whether it truly speaks to the history and character of Cherokee County and the Murphy area.

A lie still believed

Delusions are real to those having them. You needn’t be a die-hard President Donald Trump believer to believe what happened on CNN.

President Joe Biden shined a light on his own plight to be able to gather his thoughts and present them cohesively. His frailty and inability to navigate consciously around others is apparent. He has been led off, helped off, wondered off and coaxed back. It appears he is being led around by the nose.

It is not this man’s fault. We know the signs and possibly the cause of what we are seeing.

Despite special counsel Robert Hur’s assessment that Biden had unlawfully retained and mishandled classified materials for decades, he declined to prosecute him because “at trial, Mr. Biden would likely present himself to a jury, as he did during our interview of him, as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

After the little bits and pieces we have seen, is it any wonder why they are refusing to release the recording of his interview with Hur?

We have been lied to. The facade has crumbled. The innards of the Trojan Horse exposed. The question remains, who are they and what are their true intentions?

‘Don’t get me started’

President Donald Trump does not make me uncomfortable. His open, blatant disrespect for our Constitution, the rule of law, women in general and  many other things, enrages me.

As to his list of Trump’s accomplishments, I will neither accept or reject it, as it comes from Trump’s White House and almost everything I have heard him say is a lie, specifically designed to keep his base enraged, misled and sending him (the alleged billionaire) money, I would question it.

Arguing facts with people who live in the alternate universe of facts versus “alternative facts” is a fool’s errand.

As to what I am opposed to, exactly, I would start with his open and ongoing attempt to lie about winning the election and inciting a riot to attack the seat of our government to prevent the transfer of executive power.

Then, there is the fact that he has been convicted in a jury trial under New York state law on 34 felony counts of, here again, lying on business records.

He is so depraved that he not only wants to sexually assault women, but brag about how he can get away with it.

He has stolen vast amounts of classified material and lied repeatedly about that.

He facilitated the overturning of the right of all women to control what happens in their own bodies.

But like I always say, “Don’t get me started.”
