This week’s question: “Would you like to see the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office develop a citizens auxiliary unit, as discussed at a recent meeting?”
- Yes. This may be a tool to help make residents safer.
- No. We need to leave fighting crime to professionals.
- It depends on how it’s set up; the devil’s in the details.

“I think it’s good if they are not gonna be fighting, and it’s an even better idea if the taxpayers don’t have to pay for it.”

“I think mainly that the devil’s in the details, it just depends on how it’s implemented. If it just serves like a fundraising group or something like that, I feel that already exists. If it serves like a crime watch, then I think it’s a good idea.
“Being in a small area, we don’t get probably enough people signing up for the paid part of law enforcement. They’re probably overworked and have a lot on their plates. Hopefully, this will serve as a low- or no-cost way to reduce the burden on them.”

“It’s good because they’re gonna sponsor an Explorer post and get young kids involved as an Explorer unit. It’s also good because we will be able to go through an academy that will allow us to better assist law enforcement. We were at the meeting and signed up.”

“Too much of the time, people forget that the sheriff’s office needs help in the community. I think they don’t get enough support in the community, so I’m for it. They’re reaching out to the community and allowing them to help out.
“There are things they don’t do right, and there are things they do right. I think a lot of the times they get bad-mouthed for things they shouldn’t get bad-mouthed for. I think they need the help.”

“It’s a good idea, we need some honest people to help them out. This world’s a crappy place, and they need all the help they can get.”
Leslie Goodwin, Peachtree
