This week’s question: “Would you like to see the land around Lake Hiwassee developed into a state park?”
- Yes. While it would cost taxpayers money to make the change, it would be worth it.
- No. We cannot afford the expense, and the campground closed due to lack of use.
- I need to know more to make a decision.

“I like nature the way it is. There’s already a Hanging Dog Recreational Park that’s not being used, why don’t they develop that? The Hanging Dog Recreational Park went dead with COVID. Why not just use that? There’s a campground, pier, boat ramp and beach there. Let the lake water stay the way it is. It’s better to refurbish something that’s already there than start something else.”

“I say just leave it. I think people should enjoy the natural beauty instead of changing it. They’re already doing all the development downtown, so maybe leave the lakes alone.”

“I think it should be left alone. Leave it pristine and undisturbed for all the animals. It’s better just to leave it alone than add to all the development.”

“Yes, it should be developed into a state park. We need more protected wilderness in North Carolina so it can stop being overdeveloped. We need to preserve our natural resources for the longevity of the future. A state park may stop loggers from coming in and clear cutting the land, and it will provide refuge for certain wildlife. It wouldn’t bother me if it raised taxes or costs money as long as we have woods to continue on in the future.”

“A state park, absolutely, because we can always make more of everything except land. We can never make more land; it’s a gift, and everyone can enjoy it. You can mow it down, clean it out and build on it, and ruin it. Or you can leave it as land for other people and generations to enjoy. It also protects the animals. I’d be willing to pay more in taxes to leave it be.”
