Your Opinion Matters

This week’s question: What do you think of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s construction project on U.S. 19/129?

  • Good idea. The road should be a safer place to drive.
  • Bad idea. This project’s scope is unnecessarily broad.
  • We’ll find out come 2029.
.

“I drive that road almost daily. I don’t know if there’s a better way to do it, but

it’s getting done. Was the reason they’re doing it due to multiple accidents on that road? I drive it all the time, and it’s a little tedious, but that’s a particularly rugged road, with a lot of dips and curves.

“We hope it’ll be a better road. You just have to put up with stuff sometimes for advancement; that’s where I come down on the issue. I think it’s worth it.”

Peter Breault, Murphy

.

“I’m for it because I believe it needed to be done. There’s too much traffic. I travel that road all the time, the infrastructure is falling apart, so we gotta do something.

“I’ve seen it going downhill for years. I’ve been here for 57 years, and in a way I hate to see it, but it’s part of progress.”

David Byers, Culberson

.

“It’s a waste of money, it has nothing to do with the safety of the road. I live off that road, and I’ve seen nothing change that’s doing anything for the residents of that community. They are spending taxpayer money, and they can’t keep a school bus on the road because there are no drivers.

“They’re destroying the ecosystem, and it’s a gross waste of money. They came in, and tore up people’s homes and property. I believe they’re doing it because they see future development of homes and everything else. We live in the country, we don’t want that. It’s also a muddy mess.”

Olivia Linke, Bellview

.

“I think it’s a total waste of money. They’re spending lots of money to make it pretty. I don’t think it will be more functional because they’re not adding passing lanes for tractor-trailers that I know of.

“They need to fill everybody in on what’s going on. It’s muddy and dirty; I’d like to see them put up something like mirrors for blind curves. It’s dangerous; we need guardrails and mirrors.”

Robert Linke, Bellview

.

“If they follow through with what they’re planning to do and with what they told everybody then, yes, it will be good. The road needs the development for sure. The improvement is needed; however, the process is ridiculous, how they are bouncing all over the place and leaving a mess. They told everybody how they’re gonna do it, and now it seems like everything’s changed.

“The water runoff is going onto private property. They’re doing work and clearing on property that’s not in the DOT’s project. The road is needed, but I don’t like how the DOT is going about it. They’re also not being considerate to a lot of the residents. There are major issues with the water in the lagoons. It’s worth the inconvenience – as long as they clear up what they’ve done.”
