April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, when Americans recognize the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse. As President Joe Biden said in this year’s proclamation, “There is no greater sin than the abuse of power, especially when that abuse is directed at a child. We stand together to prevent abuse and neglect, support brave survivors, and build strong communities and families, where every child can grow up happy and safe.”

While child abuse is nothing to be positive about, Cherokee and Clay counties can feel a little better knowing that HAVEN Children’s Advocacy Center in Peachtree is working on behalf of those children.
Established in 2005, HAVEN aims to support those whose lives have completely changed because of child abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking. This is done through forensic interviewing, child medical exams, child and family advocacy, court advocacy, counseling and more. A nonprofit agency, HAVEN relies on grants and donations to provide these services at no charge to the victims and their families.
The sad truth is even in our small towns and communities, hundreds of children every year are vastly affected by these vile acts and come to HAVEN in hopes of beginning a healing journey. From the moment a child and family are welcomed, the center’s team strives to eliminate barriers and disadvantages so all children – and non-offending family members – suffering from the painful symptoms of a traumatic experience are given the opportunity to heal and regain hope.
Children referred to the children’s advocacy center may face a wide range of challenges, but HAVEN takes all necessary and appropriate measures to eliminate inequities, and is dedicated to serving them through the healing and recovery process. We all play a role in the healthy development of our community’s children, and by supporting HAVEN you are helping children heal from abuse – while holding offenders accountable.
