Voters have choice at polls
![]() |
The statewide primary election is not until Tuesday, May 17, but Cherokee County residents should already thank themselves. While far too often candidates get into office without facing any challenge at the ballot box, that certainly won’t be the case in 2022.
Three Republicans are seeking the county commission seat in District 1, four in District 3 and three in District 4. For the board of education, three candidates are running in District 2, five in District 3 and another two for the at-large seat.
While popular Clerk of Court Roger Gibson is running unopposed, two people want to become register of deeds and there are three solid candidates for sheriff. While it’s unfortunate that Cherokee County doesn’t have a competitive two-party system, there are enough actual differences among the candidates this year to give voters a real choice at the polls.
You can read the complete list of local candidates at https://www.cherokeescout.com/local-newsletter/local-races-contested-elections. In the coming weeks, the Cherokee Scout will be presenting profiles of the candidates as well as articles on the most important issues facing Cherokee County. Every election is important, but this one will set the county’s direction for years to come, so it’s important to learn as much as you can before making an informed decision in the voting booth.
We thank everyone who is running for office this year for caring enough about our community to get involved at the highest levels of government. Learn everything you can about what they stand for and how that aligns with your values before heading to the polls in two months.
