Are we ready for ICE here?
This letter was sent to elected local and state officials.
My name is Martin Barros. I am a Cherokee County resident.
You have seen the headlines in big cities outside North Carolina, until now.
As our county and towns leaders, I ask, “Are you prepared for this and ICE when it comes to our community?”
Martin Barros, Brasstown
Kilpatricks say thanks
The family of Gary Kilpatrick extends our heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Your visits, cards, flowers, food, memorial donations and prayers have brought us great comfort and meant so much to us. Your compassion has helped carry us through our grief, and we are truly grateful.
We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Garcia and the staff at Erlanger Western Carolina Hospital for their exceptional comfort and care during Gary’s 19-day stay.
Special thanks to Townson-Rose Funeral Home; Mike and Mandy Taylor for coordinating the participation of the volunteer fire departments in the funeral procession; and every fire department represented. Gary was a founder of the VFDs, and his final call is one we will never forget.
Additionally, we extend our appreciation to pastor Tim Lee for his touching ceremony; the singers, Clara and Andrea Reid; the Montgomery Masonic Lodge; Bobby Barton for the Fireman’s Bell Ceremony; and the bagpiper, Emma Grace Campbell, who honored Gary’s final request by playing “Amazing Grace.”
Your kindness, presence and support mean more to our family than words can express.
Gary Kilpatrick family – Betty, Dwayne, Carol, Monica, Tim, Justin, Jewel and Jayda Murphy

New Digs for Dogs thankful
Thank you for all who helped New Digs For Dogs. This letter is to serve two purposes.
First, we would like to thank the Valley River Humane Society’s staff for picking us our wonderful senior dog, Audrey. She was a loving black lab who came into the shelter in bad condition. They loved and cared for her until calling us and we adopted her. So many incredible cats and dogs can be found at the Marble shelter. We lost her to illness after many years of memories and will adopt another senior in need.
Secondly, New Digs For Dogs wishes to thank these folks for their help with our recent fundraiser: Good Shepard Episcopal Church, Prints Plus, Kendra Martin, Susan Wells, Tom’s Key Lime Pies and All Creatures Short & Tall, all of those who purchased tickets for our lasagna dinner, those who made food, donated items for the auction and our great team of volunteers who worked our event.
Thanks to our community for caring for cats and dogs in need.
Debbie Graham, and Bonnie Cater, Hayesville
