I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, but being called a mother – and I mean that in a good sense – is one of the proudest titles for me. As a mom, I have pondered a few of my own experiences as well as those of other moms.
I was walking in the park a few days ago when I noticed a mom pushing a stroller. As she passed me, I looked back to see the baby, but she had a cover over the entire top portion of the carriage, including her baby. I thought to myself, “Good lord, how ugly does a kid have to be for a parent to completely cover it up in public?” I’ve seen this in the grocery store as well. I wanted to see it so badly, but was too terrified to ask her to lift up the cover.
I often wonder if a political candidate would still hold a baby with a stinky poo-filled diaper or barf on its bib. Let’s face it – mom doesn’t get a choice when she holds the baby, why should anyone in politics?
People come in all sizes and smells. Parents vote, and they are watching the candidates this year, so if you’re running for office, pick that stinky infant up and smile for the camera. It may get you an extra vote.
I can’t help but wonder what’s with the “go-bag” for an infant. When I use to go out with my baby, depending on how long I was going to be away, I would take a diaper or two and a bottle, all of which fit into my back pocket. I see some parents take a huge bag for their tiny human? What could they possibly need for a two-hour trip to the park?
I can’t help but offer a snort of derision every time I hear a man say, “We’re pregnant,” when really, just his wife is. There is no “we” in pregnancy or labor, and no amount of sympathy discomfort or barfing compares to the real thing.
I was pondering the reason why anyone would want to video the birthing process. For cryin’ out loud, we are twice our normal weight, have no makeup on and are in a foul mood, then someone aims a camera at our “nether region.” Are you kidding me?
My husband tried that, and I told him when I’m done exploding in order to give him a son, he’s getting a vasectomy – and I’m gonna videotape the whole darn festive event. He put the camera down and started crying.
I still can’t figure out why sometimes I see more little kids on leashes than canine.
Motherhood is not easy and often stressful, leading to strands of grey. I’ve even started seeing young moms with full heads of grey hair – however, I’m not so sure it isn’t a trending color for hair today.
Motherhood definitely pays off. Have you ever seen a person mouth the words, “Hi, Dad” on TV, in a video or in a crowd at a football game on the JumboTron? It’s always, “Hi, Mom.”
Happy Mothers Day.
