Helping women become self-reliant

Body

On Aug. 29, 2022, a friendly local resident filled with positive energy named Tammi Smith informed the Cherokee Scout that she intended to start a local chapter of an organization for women who want to learn to become more self-reliant. It would be the only chapter of its kind in North Carolina.

.

Since we love supporting good people doing good things, the Scout agreed to share a story about the National Ladies Homestead Gathering. Then we agreed to publish a monthly article and photo sharing what the nonprofit was doing, and inviting the community to join in.

That they have. On Jan. 11, 2024, the Scout received a release from the National Ladies Homestead Gathering calling Cherokee County the biggest and fastest-growing chapter in the United States, with membership expected to pass 100 by the end of February. That’s quite an accomplishment in such a short time.

Smith, president of the chapter, deserves a lot of credit for this, as do the volunteers who work with her. They have consistently brought in engaging, informative programs that are both fun and educational. And chapter members like Holly Cole say the meetings are “the highlight of my month. I have made so many friends and learned so much from them.”

This year, members are also starting Small Community Groups that meet once a month outside of the main gathering in order for women to better connect with others in their immediate areas. The chapter was recognized for its excellent growth on Feb. 1 by Cyndi Ball, the CEO and founder of the National Ladies Homestead Gathering.

The Scout congratulates the chapter on its success, and thanks members for creating something that is obviously filling a need among women in Cherokee County.
