Every June, communities across the country observe Elder Abuse Awareness Month to highlight a serious and often overlooked issue – the mistreatment of older adults.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual and financial abuse, as well as neglect. Each year, millions of seniors are affected, often by those they trust most – family members, caregivers or friends.

This month serves as a call to action for everyone to recognize the signs of elder abuse and take steps to prevent it. Warning signs may include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in financial situations, withdrawal from normal activities or poor personal hygiene. It is our collective responsibility to look out for our elders and ensure they live with dignity and respect.

Education is a powerful tool in prevention. By spreading awareness and learning how to report suspected abuse, we can make a significant difference. The Department of Social Services, Senior Centers, Reach of Cherokee County, and many other resources are partnering to host the Elder Walk at 5 p.m. Monday, June 16, starting at 5 p.m. at Konehete Park, located on the Rock Gym side.

Let Elder Abuse Awareness Month serve as a reminder that our elders deserve safety, compassion and care. By standing together, we can protect their well-being and honor their invaluable contributions to our communities.

If you or someone you know needs support, Reach of Cherokee County is here to help. Call our confidential helpline at 828-837-8064 for assistance.

Help us protect the very individuals who have paved the way for us.
