Debate future of schools with respect

Body

It’s not hyperbole to say Monday night is one of the most important times in the history of Cherokee County’s public school district.

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education are holding a joint meeting at 6 p.m. Monday to discuss the future of county schools. The meeting will be held at Tri-County Community College’s Enloe Building in Peachtree, instead of the usual location at the Cherokee County Courthouse in downtown Murphy, to accommodate what’s expected to be a large crowd.

.

While there’s nothing better than seeing it live, if you can’t make it out to the college, the Cherokee Scout will livestream the meeting through our Facebook page.

The school board started implementing its vision of the future when students returned to the classroom last month, as there are no longer any campuses combining elementary and middle school grades. The bigger challenge comes when deciding which schools to keep open – and which ones to shut down.

School board members say they are prepared to answer the questions commissioners outlined in a letter last week. They plan on sharing “a ton” of information Monday night, making this a vital meeting for anyone with an interest in local education.

While many people have preconceived ideas about the school system – and most aren’t positive about making changes – it would behoove residents to listen to what’s shared at the meeting first before making any judgment calls. We voted for this school board, and members deserve a chance to make their case before the hammer of opposition comes down.
