Child’s faith put into action

Mustard Seed - Tim Huff

Body

“The smallest of all the seeds; but when it grows up, it is larger than any herb” (Matthew 13:31).

As a general rule in our church, Sunday morning donations are handled by ushers, tellers and the treasurer. The pastor sees financial reports, but never knows the specifics of an individual gift or who gave it.

So I was surprised last month when our treasurer brought me a note from a congregant and the offering that accompanied it. She was obviously touched by the offering, and indicated that she did not know the what to do with it.

One side of the note said, “This toy that is my favret toy,” while the other had hearts, a signature and said, “Jesus, [I] love you.”

.

Included was a miniature toy unicorn.

The figurine spent two weeks in the church before it made its way back to its owner with a special blessing for the 8-year-old girl who gave it. While it stayed with me, several truths passed through my mind.

I thought of the widow’s mites, and knew this young girl had given the best she had.

Jesus loved little children, and wanted them to come to Him without hindrance.

The simple phrase, “I love you, Jesus” is never said too often.

It would be easy to think that this child did not understand what offering plates were meant to hold. In reality, she seemed to know exactly what was appropriate. She understood about love and sacrifice.

Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

I have heard sermons and lessons that referenced being like little children, but I have never known a more powerful example of child faith put into action.
