National Small Business Week took place from April 28 through May 4. That’s when U.S. Small Business Administration officially recognizes the hard work, ingenuity and dedication that goes into running a smaller business, including their contributions to the local and national economy.

While most of the businesses in the United States qualify as small, they’re making a big impact on the country. During a roundtable discussion on April 29 hosted by the White House and attended by several federal agencies to mark National Small Business Week, SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas announced the agency’s 2023 fiscal year federal procurement “scorecard” results, which measure how well – or not – federal agencies meet their small business contracting goals each year.
President Joe Biden’s administration exceeded its goal of 23 percent, awarding an all-time high 28.4 percent of federal contract dollars to small businesses. This amounts to a $178.6 billion investment in the small business economy – an increase of $15.7 billion from the previous fiscal year – and supports more than 1 million good-paying jobs in manufacturing, construction, research & development, technology, defense and other vital industries.
This weekend, local residents get to see another advantage of our small businesses community, as the Murphy Business Association presents the annual Spring Festival downtown. This event may take place on only one day, but it has been in the planning stage since last year’s festival wrapped up.
Don’t miss this opportunity to take advantage of a (hopefully) beautiful spring day with family, friends and friends you haven’t met yet. A small-town festival is a wonderful slice of life we all need a little more of.
