John C. Campbell Folk School Fighting hunger: Staff and local potters are crafting one-of-a-kind handmade bowls for the annual Empty Bowls fundraiser at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown.
The former National Guard Armory on James A. Mulkey Drive east of Murphy was first being converted for use by Cherokee County’s government in 2020.
Randy Foster/editor@cherokeescout.com A construction crew works on the roundabout at the intersection of Hiwassee, Peachtree and Tennessee streets and Valley River Avenue in downtown Murphy at 8:24 p.m. March 4. The N.C. Department of Transportation project will reconfigure downtown streets, then finish off with new pavement and striping. Road work continues from about 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and will last well into spring.

Cannon Crompton/sports@cherokeescout.com Walgreens drugstore off Main Street in Andrews locked its doors for the last time Friday. The company quickly removed all signage from the exterior of the building, posted a closed sign on the door and the store is listed as permanently closed on Google Maps.
