Murphy – The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit concluded an ongoing investigation with the arrest of local resident Colby Brett Phillips on March 4.
This arrest marks the latest development in a case that began in January 2024, when Phillips was initially apprehended and charged with trafficking methamphetamine after being found in possession of 125 grams of the substance, according to a release. At that time, he was issued a $400,000 bond, which he subsequently posted.

Following his release, sheriff’s agents continued to investigate Phillips based on credible information indicating that he resumed selling illegal narcotics. On March 4, sheriff’s agents conducted a traffic stop on Phillips, who was operating a vehicle in Cherokee County without a valid driver’s license.
During the stop, authorities discovered Phillips in possession of 14.5 grams of methamphetamine, a handgun and more than $4,900 in cash. The release says he was promptly taken into custody.
A subsequent search warrant was executed at Phillips’ residence, where investigators seized an additional 250 grams of meth, more than $5,000 in cash and various items of drug paraphernalia. As a result, Phillips faces the following charges:
- Two counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver methamphetamine;
- Two counts of trafficking methamphetamine;
- Two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia;
- Maintaining a dwelling place for controlled substances.
Following his arrest, the release says Phillips was placed on a 48-hour hold. On March 5, he was issued a $250,000 bond, in addition to the existing $400,000 bond from his prior arrest. He remained in custody at the Cherokee Scout’s press time Tuesday morning.
“This arrest underscores our commitment to disrupting the illegal drug trade in Cherokee County,” Sheriff Dustin Smith said in commending the Narcotics Unit’s diligence. “We will continue to pursue those who threaten the safety and well-being of our community.”
