A temporary shelter in works

Robbinsville – Graham County has struck a deal to provide a temporary shelter for strays and dangerous dogs.

The announcement came after newspaper reports revealing that the longstanding agreement between Graham County and the Valley River Humane Society in Marble had reached an impasse and concluded on Feb. 1. Local government officials said they are ready to move forward, rather than reflect on what has already taken place.

The humane society continues to serve residents in Cherokee and Clay counties.

“Graham County has made the decision not to renew the contract with Valley River Humane Society for various reasons but has agreed to enter into an agreement with a local non-profit,” according to a Feb. 6 release.

The Graham Star later confirmed that local animal advocate Brittney Holder is working with the county to establish a local holding facility at her nonprofit agency, Graham County Animal Refuge.

The release cited N.C. General Statute 153A442, which says “a county may establish, equip, operate and maintain an animal shelter or may contribute to the support of an animal shelter and for these purposes may appropriate funds not otherwise limited as to use by law.”

‘‘As this process moves forward, the residents will receive updates regarding the adequate care and temporary shelter.”
