Murphy – Downtown was busy over the weekend.
Just before the 9-11 Commemoration on the steps of the Cherokee County Courthouse, protesters stood on the city square holding signs and flags encouraging people to honk their horns in support. Citizens for a Better America were protesting President Joe Biden’s administration by holding signs that read “Impeach Biden.”
About 20 people stood on the street corners in small clusters holding handmade signs and waving flags. Don Adams, organizer of the event, said they were “no longer the silent majority.”
It was a noisy protest, as people shouted out of their car windows and honked their horns in solidarity. Adams said about “95 percent of the people driving give us a positive response.” The protesters were instructed to “peacefully and patriotically bring your flags and signs and such.”
The group passed out flyers outlining the “Grounds for Impeachment of Mr. Joe Biden.” Their arguments included, “13 of America’s finest, dead and the severe wounding of dozens more” in reference to the recent Kabul airport attacks in Afghanistan.
The group is informed by a lofty and wide-ranging listed missions with their final tenant as “encourage others.” As drivers waved and honked at the Main Street intersection, Citizens for a Better America seemed to be filling that mission. The protesters were all volunteers who Adams said “have had enough.”
When asked why they chose to protest Biden’s initiatives on the 20th anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy, Adams said, “We’re all patriots out here trying to keep our country safe.”
He said the signs were recycled from President Barack Obama’s era. He simply covered Obama’s name with masking tape and in careful black printing wrote in “Biden.”
“It’s time for us to get up of our sofas and do something,” Adams added.
The group planned to stop their protest at noon as to not interfere with the 9-11 Commemoration just a block away.
