Murphy – N.C. MedAssist will host a Mobile Free Pharmacy for the first time in Cherokee County beginning at 9 a.m. Friday at Murphy First Baptist Church.
This event will provide free medications distributed in a drive-through setting for any local resident ages 18 and older. N.C. MedAssist began in 1997 through the Mecklenburg Medical Society Alliance and last year dispensed more than $63 million in medicines for patients, according to medassist.org.
“N.C. MedAssist seeks to ensure that no eligible person in North Carolina has to choose between purchasing food or their needed medication," medassist.org states. "Improving the patient's health and lowering uncompensated health care costs for all stakeholders."
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the church building, 517 Hiwassee St. near the intersection of U.S. 64 West. Free over-the-counter medications will be provided, including cold, cough, flu medicine, pain relief, vitamins and children's medicines.
"We want the community to know that this is a free event that is open to anyone and everyone," MedAssist project manager Kinzie Luce said. "There are no income or residency requirements and we will never ask for I.D."
The event is rain or shine, and all participants will be asked to remain in their vehicles and proceed through the designated layout.
The event will also serve housebound individuals. Homebound orders can be completed by calling Cherokee County Senior Center Director Denise Cross at 837-2467.
Volunteers are also needed for the event. If you would like to volunteer, fill out the information sheet at www.medassist.org/volunteer.
