I have a sales job and have been at the same location for many years. However, I do believe now may be a good time to switch my occupation.
With so many people not wanting to work and just as many employers needing workers, I feel as though it’s a free-for-all within the job market right now.
Employers are more than willing to train folks to do the tasks at hand just to have people who will come to the office and do the jobs that have remained idle since COVID.
Times are still ripe with opportunities to get just about any job you want and learn the business as ya go so I began thinking about what I’d like to do now regarding my future employment.
I’m realistic enough to know I could never be a restaurant server as I can’t remember what I ate for lunch so how can I be expected to remember what several people at a table want, besides, I may be tempted to snack from their plate along the way and get in trouble so that type of job is off the table for me.
I don’t believe I would make a very good daycare worker either. I once left a baby in a carrier on the roof of my car while distracted by a phone call. Luckily, other motorists motioned for me to pull over before I drove too far down the highway. The kid appeared ok so I got lucky that day but I don’t want to push it.
Since I can’t find my way out of a paper bag even with a GPS, a career in real estate is also off my list of potential new jobs. Because I use landmarks as my point of reference what happens if a mountain goes missing? I’d be so lost and that would be too time-consuming for my clients, so out of respect for them I won’t consider that career.
I would never be able to work in accounting as my own checkbook is such a nightmare the bank won’t even help me figure out what went wrong anymore, they even handed me another bank’s phone number while stating, “Go check them out.”
You won’t see me in a customer service job either simply because I don’t believe the customer is always right, and I just may be tempted to say something to them about it. Now that I think about it, I don’t care for people very much either.
My son’s a cook but I’m afraid that type of job is not right for me either. If something doesn’t come with microwave instructions I’m lost in the kitchen.
As a kid I burnt my Easy-Bake Oven right to the ground. I swapped out their little cooking light bulb for a 1,000 watt bulb in order to try and broil something. Perhaps things wouldn’t have gotten so out of control had the company included a fire extinguisher with their oven. Either way, the culinary careers are out for me.
I once tried teaching self defense classes but that ended real quick when six students incurred lacerations that resulted in a police report and a cop accusing me of operating a fight club. He let me go with a warning but demanded I shut it down. Teaching is not my strong suit so I guess I’ll pass on that career as well.
I do like the medical profession, however, and am fairly self-taught on many procedures thanks to the internet. Perhaps I’ll apply for a job in that field and my new employer can teach me the rest as I go. Surgery would be the area I’d go into.
As a kid my Uncle Vinny let me sew his initials on the bottom of his foot with blue thread which turned out pretty well, so I do have skills.
Regardless of the type of employment I decide upon, I’ll wait until just before Christmas to apply, that way I’ll also get their holiday bonus if I’m accepted as no employer would be so cold as to exclude the new hire from the festive perk.
