Texana readies for 2nd Juneteenth Celebration

Body

Texana – The Texana Community Development Club will hold its second annual Juneteenth celebration  from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday at the Texana Community Center, 29 Texana Community Center Road north of Murphy.

The event will again feature a car show, food vendors and musical acts, including Cherokee County Fair favorite The Danny Dawson Band and popular regional reggae act Natti Love Joys.

The day-long celebration includes guest speakers focusing on topics of both local and national historical significance in the historically African-American community of Texana to provide ways for the community to connect and unify.

Known officially as Juneteenth National Independence Day – and informally as Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day in Texas, Freedom Day and Jubilee Day – it was signed into federal law as a national holiday in 2021. The celebration is rooted in Major Gen. Gordon Granger’s final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865, when slaves still held in bondage in the state were formally made aware of the freedoms granted them by the document.
