MURPHY
Sheriff hosts 30 students
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office hosted about 30 students from Murphy High School on Nov. 20.
These students are enrolled in the Career & Technical Education program, which serves to prepare students for employment or further education in their chosen fields. The program offers students career pathways, work-based learning, industry credentials (for those who seek certifications in certain fields) and college credit, according to a release.
While at the sheriff’s office, the students were given opportunities to interact with members of the administration, detectives, civilian staff, patrol deputies and detention staff. The State Bureau of Investigations was also on site, offering students insights into the many opportunities available there.
In addition to the presentations, students were provided with a supervised tour of the sheriff’s office and detention center. Students were allowed to learn about the many roles and responsibilities of being a detention officer. Students were not exposed to any inmates or inmate occupied areas for their protection.
“If we can positively impact the life of just one student, this makes this event a worthy cause, and one we proudly stand behind,” Sheriff Dustin Smith said.
