Texana — Since 1971, Brenda Blount has lived in Texana , where she appreciated for her caring and unselfish spirit.
A South Carolina native, Blount grew up in Tabor City. She recalled working with her family in tobacco; her job then was to hand the tobacco leaves to her mother, who would then string them. She also made extra money picking strawberries before going to school.
"That's how I made my money for my mom for Mother's Day,” Blount said.
She graduated from Douglas High School in 1965. She attended college in Detroit, where she received an associate’s degree in business administration.
She met and married her husband, the late Rev. Frank Blount, while in Detroit. They would remain there for another three years, when she worked for the Department of Social Services.
In 1971, they moved to the Texana. She worked for a brief period of time with Magnavox in personnel.
She recalled her two main jobs then were with Neighborhood Youth Corps, where she was the secretary and bookkeeper. She also worked with Wachovia Bank in Murphy for 10 years before she transferred to Greensboro for two more years as a result of her husband's employment.
In 1999, Blount graduated from Montreat College in Black Mountain with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Upon moving back to Cherokee County, she was employed at Palmer's Surveying, then went to work with Cherokee County Schools for 25 years.
"We worked as a team,” she said of that time. “We had the best office environment, and we all worked together. It was a wonderful place to work. We were a family, and most of us worked there for 25 or 30 years.
"I never dreaded going to work a single day. Everybody in the school system was important. It was my favorite job. We were always helping the children."
She spends her time today working with the Texana Community Center, Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and Lighthouse Ministries as assistant secretary. Her favorite color is green, and she loves tulips. Christmas and Easter are her favorite holidays.
She has two grown children; her son, Frank Christopher, and her daughter, Lakisha Blount. Brenda is also active with her three grandchildren – Taryn, Alex, and Roman. She also babysits her great niece.
A humble woman, Blount includes others when talking about her accomplishments and always gives the glory to God. Her future plans include continuing to help her grandchildren and enjoy the wonderful life God has given her.
