Spay/Neuter Awareness Month grew from one state in 2012 to a movement covering the entire country today. This month was part of a broader effort to reduce the number of stray and unwanted pets, while not using methods for controlling the pet population that were harsh and often inhumane.
The introduction of low-cost clinics made these procedures more affordable for pet owners. Happily, Cherokee County has just such a clinic through Logan’s Run Rescue in Murphy, which offers low-cost (and even free if you volunteer) services for area pet owners at Tri-State Spray/Neuter & Veterinary Clinic.
The nonprofit is funded by generous donations and a thrift store at Lakeside Plaza, 3000 U.S. 64 W., which includes a nearby appliance and furniture warehouse at 120 Storage Road. Over the last 17 years, more than 50,000 cats and dogs have been “fixed,” as we used to say, at an affordable cost thanks to the volunteers who make the rescue a reality.
Since the last Tuesday of February is World Spay Day, that makes this the perfect week to celebrate the difference Logan’s Run has made in our pet-loving community.
