Apple Maps
The pilot of a small single-engine airplane was killed when the aircraft crashed off Fairview Road halfway between Andrews and Marble on Saturday (April 15) morning.
Authorities were still working out all the details and weren't prepared to issue a statement, but did confirm that there was one death in the crash and that the person's family was on scene.
There were no other injuries with the nearest house about 200 yards to the west.
It is unclear whether the aircraft crashed into the trees or if fell from above. The crash was reported around 10:30 a.m. and skies were partly cloud, breezy with good visibility.
Western Carolina Regional Airport is about a mile northeast of the crash site. The aircraft may have been making an approach to land or a mile into its flight if it just took off.
Local fire, rescue and law enforcement were on scene to secure the site and helped assist the family members as they arrived.
More information will be added as it becomes available.
