Wildcats wrestle in duals and tournament

The Andrews varsity wrestling team put in the miles this week as the Wildcats headed to Travelers Rest, S.C., on Dec. 2, then traveled to East Henderson High School on Saturday for a tournament.

Andrews opened the week with two duals matches in South Carolina on Dec. 2. In their first dual, the Wildcats took on Rutherfordton-Spindale Central High School and lost 72-6.

Andrews only had three athletes compete, resulting in a high school on forfeit wins for their opponent. In the 190-pound weight class, Hayden Virtanen got six points for the Wildcats with a forfeit victory.

In the 150-pound division, Andrews’ Chase Beasley lost to Eli Warren by fall. In the 285-pound division, Ford Ashe of Andrews lost by fall to Alex Roach.

In their second and final dual of the day, they took on Travelers Rest and lost 83-0.

Beasley lost to Ayden Hicks by a 17-1 technical fall. Virtanen and Ashe lost by pinfall to wrap up their day.

In the second event of the week, Andrews was back on the road as they competed in the War Eagles Invitational tournament Saturday at East Henderson High.

Beasley advanced the farthest, as he competed in six matches Saturday. He started his day with a 17-14 win over Joshua Van Dyke of Brevard to advance to the quarterfinals of the 150-pound division.

Beasley then lost by fall to Alexander May of Hendersonville. Once in the consolation bracket, Beasley earned three straight wins by fall to earn a spot in the third-place match, where he lost to Hayden Hunt of Hayesville by pinfall.

Ashe also competed in the tournament, wrestling three matches. He lost his first match by fall to Christian MacKinnon of Stuart W. Cramer High School.

In the consolation bracket, he got a win by disqualification to advance. His day came to an end in the fifth round of the consolation bracket by fall to Anthony McFadden of Asheville.

The Wildcats will be back in action at the Devil Duals in Swain County on Saturday.

Murphy will also be attending the duals competition in Swain County, as both teams compete at the same event for the second time.
