Wildcats top Cherokee

The Andrews baseball team picked up their second win of the season when the Wildcats defeated Cherokee in a high-scoring matchup.

However, the softball team struggled, losing two games against the Lady Braves.

Baseball

In their first game of the week, the Wildcats traveled to Cherokee to take on the Braves on March 25. Cherokee got the win 11-5.

After a scoreless first inning, both teams went to work at the plate. Andrews got out to a 1-0 lead, but Cherokee scored five runs in the bottom of the first to lead 5-1. Andrews added another run in the top of the third to make it 5-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cherokee scored two runs, then added four more in the bottom of the fifth to lead 11-2. In the top of the sixth, the Cats scored three runs but couldn’t rally late.

Drew Dartez scored two runs, while Kelby Waldroup, Dawson Stalcup and Tanner Postell had one run each for Andrews. Logan Hyde and Postell shared pitching duties.

On Friday, the Cats returned home to close out their week and series with Cherokee. The Cats got their bats going and won 11-10, fending off a late rally from the Braves.

Cherokee scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Cats scored three to take the lead. After a scoreless second inning, the Cats added two runs in the bottom of the third to lead 5-2.

Andrews extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead.

Over the next three innings, Cherokee rallied to make it close. In the fifth, the Braves scored two runs, and in the sixth they scored three to make it a 10-7 game.

Andrews scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 11-7 heading into the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Cherokee rallied for three runs to bring them within one. Andrews came up clutch and shut down the Braves for the win.

Softball

The Lady Wildcats kicked off their week on March 25, when they traveled to Cherokee and lost 6-1.

Cherokee started the game with three runs in the bottom of the first. They added one run in both the third and fourth innings to lead 5-0 before the Lady Cats scored one run in the fifth inning. Katie Moses scored the Lady Cats’ lone run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cherokee scored one more run to lead 6-1. After a scoreless sixth inning and top of the seventh, the Lady Braves wrapped up the win.

The Lady Cats wrapped up their week as they returned home Friday to face Cherokee again. In a five-inning game, Cherokee won 14-1.

Cherokee held Andrews scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, as the Braves racked up seven runs through the first three innings, then added seven more in the top of the fifth. Chanteah Rattler scored the lone run for the Lady Cats in the bottom of the fifth.

Up next

Andrews will have some time off – including spring break from April 7-11 – before they take on in-county rivals Murphy at home Tuesday, April 15. The baseball team will play a game before that, as the Wildcats will travel to Union County, Ga., on Monday, April 14 to take on their last out of state opponent of the season.
