Wildcats get big win over Summit

Andrews – Coming off a 50-point loss to Franklin, the Andrews boys varsity basketball team righted the ship with a 57-point victory over Summit Charter.

In a game where they made as many 3-pointers as they did two-point shots, the Wildcats defeated

Summit Charter 73-16 on Dec. 4.

Keegan Ellis started the game with a 3-pointer for the Wildcats. Andrews went on to score 12 consecutive points before Summit Charter got on the board. At the first timeout of the first quarter, the Cats led 17-2 and were in full control of the game.

Andrews continued to pile on the points throughout the second quarter. About halfway through, the Cats were up 34-6.

The Wildcats took a 46-6 lead to halftime. During the first half, the Wildcats made multiple substitutions so everyone could get playing time.

Like the first half, the Cats continued to pile on the points throughout the second half. Andrews played tight defense and picked up rebounds to only allow Summit to score 16 points in the game.

Late in the game, Myca Mustin made two blocks to keep Summit’s total at 16 points.

Ty Clark led the Wildcats with 17 points. He was 3/5 from the three-point line and went 7/10 on field goals.

Ellis had 16 points and went 4/5 on three-pointers. Landon Greene had nine points and had a team-leading eight rebounds. Eli Aguilar led the team in assists with five.

The Wildcats were 56.6% on field goals and 54.2% from the three-point line. They also had 25 points in transition and 30 points off of turnovers. On defense, they had 24 deflections, 16 steals and six blocks.

The Cats also averaged 1.49 points per possession while Summit Charter averaged 0.31 points per possession.

They also had 12 offensive rebounds and 28 rebounds on defense, while Summit Charter only had eight offensive rebounds and 12 defensive rebounds.

The Cats made 16 shots in the paint and Summit Charter on made four in the paint.

The Cats did draw more fouls with 12 personal fouls.

After the game, Wildcats head coach Matt Maennle said, “They did well. It’s just one of those games that we just have to work to get better after getting hit in the mouth Saturday. We’re still licking our wounds after that one. We just have to get better.”

Speaking on bouncing back after the loss to Franklin by getting the big win over Summit Charter, Maennle said, “It was good. That’s just what I told them in the locker room. We’ll look back mid-January, end of January, when tournament play starts, and we’re going to be thankful for the Franklin game. …

“Franklin is good, and we needed a bounce-back win, so we’ve had a good few days of practice.”

The Wildcats’ next matchup is today, when they travel to take on Tuscola. On Friday, Andrews will hit the road to take on Cherokee. The Cats return home at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, to take on Robbinsville.
