Bryson City – Athletes from Tri-County Early College, Andrews and Nantahala competed at Swain County on April 9.
Andrews and Tri-County competed with a smaller team due to Cherokee County Schools’ spring break.
They went up against Cherokee, Hayesville, Highlands, Robbinsville, Rosman, host Swain County and The Catamount School.
Tri-County sent the most athletes from local schools to the meet. Fern Crayton won first place in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200m runs. Crayton also came in second in the 800m run. Also earning a top-three finish were the boys 4x400 and 4x800m relays coming in third and second places, respectively.
For the Tri-County girls, Catherine Gonzalez came in fourth in the 800m run, while Bryanna Jaime came in ninth in both the 200m and 400m dash. Jaime also came in 10th in the 100m dash to round out the girls’ top-10 finishes.
Gonzalez also came in 11th in the 400m dash. In discus, Emma Smith came in 16th and Jenny Jaime came in 20th. In shot put, Smith came in 14th and Jenny Jaime came in 19th.
For the boys, William Boyd came in fourth in the 400m dash, Landon Spies came in fifth in the 800m run and Joshua Bickam came in sixth in the 200m dash. Rounding out their top-10 finishes, Mason Smith came in sixth and Elias Diaz-Menchu came in seventh, Julian Arvizu came in eighth and Jovani Baker came in ninth in the 800m run. Jacob Gonzalez also came in seventh in the 400m dash.
Diaz-Menchu came in fourth and Arvizu came in fifth in the 1,600m run.
Mason Smith came in 13th and Leo Henningfeld came in 17th in the 200m dash. Baker came in 12th and Henningfeld came in 15th in the 400m dash. Henningfeld also came in 21st in the 100m dash.
In the field events, Arvizu came in 17th in shot put and 19th in discus.
William Wood was Andrews’ only athlete at the meet and he competed in discus and shot put. Wood have been competing in extra meets this season in an attempt to break the school record in discus.
At the Swain meet, Wood came in third in discus and fifth in shot put.
Wood also competed in the J. Alan Peoples Invitational in Columbus, N.C. on April 8. Wood came in first place in discus.
On Saturday, Wood and Jaden Crocker will be going to UNC-Asheville for a meet and both will compete in discus.
Nantahala sent three athletes to the Swain County meet. Bryson Newton came in 13th in the girls 100m dash.
In boys discus, Chase McMahan came in 20th and Zack Bryant came in 21st. In shot put, McMahan came in 15th and Bryant came in 18th.
