BOONE: Sports bets paying back

Appalachian State University announced they will be building a new indoor athletic practice facility. About 11%, or $3.3 million, of the funding will come from tax revenue collected from mobile sports betting in North Carolina.

The University of North Carolina Board of Governors last week approved a financing package to build the facility.

At a Board of Governors presentation, they said App State’s old practice facility “is nearing the end of its useful life.” The new facility will include a full 100-yard football field, training space and leased space for a sports medicine clinic.

Since legal mobile sports betting went live in the state in March, $17 million in tax revenue has been transferred to UNC System schools.
