SOCCER: Lady Dogs fall at home
The Murphy girls soccer team kicked off season Thursday by hosting class 5A Smoky Mountain.
They lost the season opener 4-1 to the tough competition.
This is the second straight season the Lady Bulldogs have started with a loss to Smoky Mountain.
Murphy will return to the pitch on the road at 4 p.m. Thursday against Hayesville.
OUTDOOR: Wildlife to host classes
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is set to host various classes across the state and virtually. In-person classes will be held in Fayetteville and Morganton, with virtual classes held for anyone through Microsoft Teams.
Some of the virtual class offerings the NCWRC is having include “springtime tactics for crappie fishing” from 6-8 p.m. today. “How to read a trout stream” will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

BASKETBALL: McNabb up at Belmont
Murphy native Sofia McNabb is wrapping up her sophomore season at Belmont Abbey on the women’s basketball team. Through the Conference Carolinas tournament, McNabb is averaging 7.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game through 22 games played this season.
In Belmont Abbey’s tournament loss to Chowan, McNabb scored 11 points and had seven rebounds in 15 minutes off of the bench. The team will await NCAA March Madness bracketing at 6 p.m. Sunday, as Belmont Abbey is the No. 10 seed of the Southeast region of DII.
