Murphy tops cup standings
Murphy High School finished atop the Smoky Mountain Conference in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings for the 2020-21 school year. The Conference Cup, which is a companion to the statewide Wells Fargo Cup, is based on regular-season performance within each respective conference.
Points are awarded based on regular-season performances within conference play, with each conference having their own scoring system. Murphy scored 141 points to beat Swain County by four points, capturing conference championships in men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s track and field, and volleyball.

Tennis tourney set Aug. 28-29
The Georgia Mountain Tennis Championships will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 28-29, at the Young Harris College Tennis Complex off U.S. 74.
All ages and levels of play are encouraged to participate. There will be singles, doubles and mixed doubles brackets, with trophies for the champions, finalists and consolation winners.

Chamber golf tourney Sept. 8
The Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce will be holding its 12th annual Golf Classic on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Mountain Harbour Golf Club. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and tee time is 9:30 a.m.

Pickleball tourney set
Union County High School’s Future Business Leaders of America, which has been reinstated after a 10-year absence, is hosting a pickleball tournament in conjunction with the Blairsville Pickleball club to help raise funds for competitions Saturday, Sept. 18.
