Lady Cats fall to Devils
The Andrews junior varsity softball team took on Swain County in a two-game series where the Wildcats didn’t lose.
In the first meeting on March 31 in Andrews, the game ended in a 1-1 time due to lack on light.
They met again on Thursday in Swain County and the Lady Wildcats got the 5-0 victory.
With the win and tie, the team is undefeated heading into spring break with a 7-0-1 record.
ATHLETICS
Local games signup open
Registration for the 2026 Cherokee Clay Senior Games is underway.
It is $15, with an additional $5 per ticket to the closing banquet for participants. Guest tickets to the closing banquet are $15.
The games will kick off with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Clay County Recreation Center in Hayesville.
Prior to that, the 5K road race will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Chatuge Dam trail in Hayesville.
SWIM
Local swim signup open
Signups for the CCAC summer season start poolside from 5:30-7 p.m. on April 13 and run through May, with the season starting June 1.
They will start with morning practices from 8-9:30 a.m. The team has six scheduled meets, as well as Mountain Swim League conference championships on July 18 and All-Stars on July 23.
Regardless of age, swimmers should be able to swim one length of the pool. They will also have a program for beginning swimmers this summer.
In the team’s last event, Matteo Colandrea earned three personal records in the 50-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke.

WRESTLING
ACWF back in Peachtree
The American Championship Wrestling Federation returned to the Peachtree Community Center Saturday night for a hard-hitting show.
To open the night, MD King defeated El Fabuloso in his return. Then Robert Starr defeated Manu Tau, then Starr turned heel and joined Kevin Walker.
In tag team action, The Family defeated Gods of Wrestling.
Digger James and Gun Metal Gray defeated Billy Havoc and Axel Freakin Gunn.
After the match, Digger James called it a career and all the wrestlers came out to show their respect after his 30-year career.
Flex Ferguson defeated Mike Clay, then Ferguson turned on the crowd that had rooted for him his entire time in ACWF. Then Thundercat and newcomer Theo defeated Vito and KZ Smith.
Moki and Killshot defeated Mountain Man Jeremy stiles and Frodo. Referee Ronnie cheated, resulting in a two-month suspension.
Then Frodo hit him with a stunner.
ESPORTS
Dogs fall in match
The Murphy High School esports team suffered its second straight loss as the regular season comes to a close.
In the last match before the playoffs, the Bulldogs fell 13-9.
With the loss, the team has a 4-4 record and are ranked 40th heading into the state playoffs.
The first-round matchup will be held today as the Dogs look to continue their season.
OUTDOORS
Turkey hunt open soon
Its turkey time across the state as wild turkey spring season opens Saturday.
Saturday is the first day you can hunt for bearded or male turkeys only and Sunday all turkeys can be hunted.
The season runs until Saturday, May 9, for bearded and male turkeys. For all other turkeys, the season wraps up Sunday, May 10.
