SHOOTING: Team shoots at Regionals
The Andrews shooting teams competed in the District 9 Regional event in Polk County on March 21.
The high school Black and Green teams shot well and earned a trip to the state tournament.
Braden Gaither and Briggs Luther had a perfect score in shotgun at the event.
Blane Gibson on the Green team came in second in archery and fifth overall for the day. He missed first place by one point.
Carlie James came in third in rifle and was just shy of first place.
The team also earned the Sportsmanship Award.
SWIMMING: Local team back in pool
The Cherokee County Aquatic Club returned to the pool Friday at the St. Patrick’s Day Invitational in Cullowhee.
Ophilia Whitney and Oceania Vaughn had multiple first-place finishes at the event. Estell Vaughn, Elijah Whitney and Connor Whitney also earned first-place finishes.
Sign-ups for the CCAC summer season start April 13 and run through May, with the season starting June 1.
They will start with morning practices from 8-9:30 a.m. The team has six scheduled meets, as well as Mountain Swim League conference championships and All-Stars.
Regardless of age, swimmers should be able to swim one length of the pool. They will also have a program for beginning swimmers this summer.

WRESTLING: ACWF back in Peachtree
The American Championship Wrestling Federation will return to the Peachtree Community Center on Saturday for the first of two shows this month.
Many fan-favorite ACWF superstars will take to the ring for action as well as putting title belts on the line.
Doors open at 5 p.m., with the show starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for ages 6-12 and free for kids 5 and under.
Their second show in April will be Saturday, April 18, at the Peachtree Community Center.
ESPORTS: Dogs fall in match
The Murphy High School esports team fell in its Valorant match 16-14 in overtime on March 25.
The Dogs trailed 12-4, but then fought back to tie the game at 12 before ultimately losing in overtime.
They didn’t fall far in the East Region standings as they are now in 29th out of 124 teams.
Today is their last regular season match as they look to solidify their place in the playoffs.
The top 64 teams in the region earn a spot in the playoffs.
ATHLETICS: Local Games sign-up open
Registration for the 2026 Cherokee Clay Senior Games is underway.
It is $15, with an additional $5 per ticket to the closing banquet for participants. Guest tickets to the closing banquet are $15.
The games will kick off with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Clay County Recreation Center in Hayesville.
Prior to that, the 5K road race will be held at
9 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Chatuge Dam trail in Hayesville.
