Weaver top performer

Isaac Weaver of Andrews has been awarded the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s Performance of the Week for Sept. 5-10.

In the Wildcats’ 44-27 win at Mitchell on Sept. 9, Weaver ran for 157 yards and a touchdown, caught two passes for 17 yard and a touchdown, had a 76-yard punt return for a touchdown, and also had 10 tackles and two interceptions on defense. Despite sitting out last week against North Georgia, Weaver has accumulated 716 total yards of offense, scored 13 touchdowns to go along with four interceptions in Andrews first four games.

The Wildcats were also named the NCHSAA 1A Team of the Week for their performance against the Mountaineers.

RALEIGH

Youth Deer Hunting Day

The N.C. Wildlife Commission has announced that Saturday will be the 2022 edition of Youth Deer Hunting Day.

On this day, anyone ages 17 and under may use guns or any other legal equipment to hunt deer without an adult, if they have completed a hunter education course. They must also wear blaze orange on that day, even if it’s an area where hunting with archery and deer is Z
lawful.

Those ages 18 and older can only use archery gear to hunt.

Youth hoops clinic at gym

Local youth coach Tony Chiofolo will lead a basketball clinic at The Rock Gym for grades 3-5  from 5:30-7 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday for the rest of this month and into October.

Both boys and girls are welcome to attend. Chiofolo, who has been a youth coach in the area for 25 years, played for the Washington Generals, the touring foe of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters.

HAYESVILLE

Charity golf event Oct. 8

Registration for the United Way of Clay and Cherokee Counties Charity Golf Tournament is underway.

The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Mountain Harbor Golf Club. Funds from the event will go to numerous local agencies that help those who need it.

The event costs $400 for a team of four players, with $600 going to the first-place winner, $400 to second place and $300 to third place. Check in time will at 8 a.m., with tee time at 9 a.m.
