Disease in state’s deer

There have been scattered observations of sick and dead dear in numerous counties across the state due to an outbreak of hemorrhagic disease. According to the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, the term hemorrhagic disease is used for both Blue-tongue and Epizootic disease, which both cause similar symptoms in deer.

The disease has been reported in 39 counties in the state, with the highest frequency coming from the Mountains and Piedmont regions. Once an outbreak begins, it usually continues until the weather is not ideal for the biting midges that spread the disease, which is usually the first frost of fall.

Signs that a deer may have a hemorrhagic disease include rings on their hooves or scars on the dental plate. It is not transmissible to humans. The commission is asking that citizens report dead or sick deer to their local district wildlife biologist to help monitor the impact of the disease in deer herds across the state.
