TRACK

Cats run at Tryon

After a location change, the Andrews indoor track team competed at Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring on Jan. 28.

The team’s highest finish came as Natalie Garrett came in second place in the 55-meter dash. She also came in eighth in the triple jump and 13th in the long jump.

The highest finish for the boys was in the 4x200m relay, as they came in third.

AJ Johnson came in fourth and Caleb Helton eighth in the long jump. Logan Patrick came in fifth in shot put.

Helton also came in sixth in high jump. Christian Helton came in sixth in the triple jump to round out the team’s top-10 finishes at the meet.

SWIM

Jags head to state

Fern Crayton and Sophia Evans of Tri-County Early College will be competing in the swimming state championship at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

Crayton and Evans will compete in the 200-yard freestyle event. Crayton will also swim in the 500-yard freestyle event.

Tri-County is a 1A school, but 1A is being combined with 2A and 3A for the swimming state championship.

BASKETBALL

Standings get update

As the regular season winds down, the standings begin to take shape ahead of the conference tournaments. The below rankings are based on the NCHSAA RPI standings used for playoff seeding.

For the boys, Murphy is ranked third in 2A at press time Tuesday morning. In 1A, Andrews is ranked eighth and Hiwassee Dam is in 21st.

For the girls, Murphy is ranked 15th in 2A at press time Tuesday morning. In 1A, Andrews is ranked 11th and Hiwassee Dam is ranked 14th.

The overall leaders in 1A are Wilson Prep Academy girls and Vance Charter boys. 

The Cherokee girls and Queen’s Grant boys are the overall leaders in 2A at press time Tuesday morning.
