Coach retires after 16 years

Murphy girls varsity soccer team will be under new leadership for their 2026 season as head coach Kim Brownlee has retired.

Brownlee helped pioneer competitive soccer at Murphy and in Cherokee County.

She started a co-ed team for the Bulldogs before they had enough players to eventually have both a girls and boys coach.

A new coach has yet to be announced for Murphy.

BASKETBALL

Cats host alumni game

Andrews High School will be playing men’s and women’s alumni basketball games Saturday. The women’s game will start at 6 p.m., with the men’s game to follow.

Money raised from the games will go to the Kenneth Solesbee Scholarship Fund. Tickets are $5, only $2 for ages 10 and under.

For $10, Valley Smoke will have barbecue plates starting at 5 p.m.

GOLF

Rotary hosts golf tourney

The Rotary Club of Murphy will host its annual Swing For Service scholarship charity golf tournament at Old Union Golf Course in Blairsville, Ga., on Saturday.

The tournament starts at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start. The entry fee is $100 per golfer or $200 per team, which includes cart, green fees, lunch and a swag bag. Lunch is provided by Valley Smoky Barbecue.

Prizes include a blue Stingray Corvette from tournament partners Valley River Chevrolet for a hole-in-one grand prize. Other prizes include free steaks for a year and a $250 gift certificate.
