Early College plays match
The Tri-County Early College girls golf team headed to Cherokee to play its second match of the season at Sequoyah National Golf Club.
Madison Deren shot a 56 to finish tied for third place, while Ruby Kuykendall shot a 61. This was Deren’s second straight match where she finished tied for third.
In the match, Tri-County competed against girls from Robbinsville and Cherokee.
OUTDOORS
Deer archery starts soon
Deer season is here for bow hunters in western North Carolina.
Archery season starts Saturday and runs until Nov. 14. Archery is followed by black powder and gun hunting seasons in November.
Youth deer hunting days are also later this month Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 27-28.
In addition, pheasant season began Sept. 1 and runs until Feb. 28, 2026.
FOOTBALL
Locals play college fields
Everett Tatham of Andrews at The College of Wooster and Kenyon Nichols of Murphy at Methodist University kicked off their seasons Saturday.
Micah Nelson of Murphy at Western Carolina University took on Wake Forest on the road Saturday.
Virginia Tech’s Tucker Holloway of Andrews took on Vanderbilt on Saturday night. Holloway led the Hokies with 43 receiving yards.
N.C. State has two Cherokee County players – offensive lineman Yousef Mugharbil of Murphy and offensive tackle Tyler West of Andrews. The Wolfpack took on the University of Virginia on Saturday.
