Week 2 SMC results

In the second week of varsity football, Hayesville was the only Smoky Mountain Conference team to win.

Murphy, Andrews, Robbinsville, Swain, Cherokee and Rosman all lost.

BASKETBALL

Young Harris alum goes pro

Karl Chavis, a Young Harris (Ga.) College alumnus, signed a professional basketball contract to continue his career with BBC Nyon in Switzerland.

Chavis was a standout forward on the Young Harris men’s basketball squad. He was an two-time All-Conference player in 2023 and 2025.

In 102 starts in 110 games played, he scored 1,711 points, 599 rebounds and 245 assists. In his senior season, he averaged 18.5 points per game and shot 45.2% from the field.

Chavis said that he is excited to play for BBC Nyon in Switzerland and that he is grateful for his time at Young Harris.

ATHLETICS

5K for life set for Sat.

Choices Murphy Pregnancy & Family Center is hosting a 5K fun run/walk Saturday at Konehete Veterans Park in Murphy.

Registration is $35 and includes a T-shirt. Kids ages 10 and under are free. Registration can be done online or in-person on the day of the race.

Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. on race day. Runners start at 9 a.m., while walkers start at 9:15 a.m.

SWIMMING

Team back next week

The Cherokee County Aquatic Club returns to Murphy Health & Fitness Center pool in September.

Registration for the fall/winter season will be Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. at the pool. Late registrations can be made on Mondays before practice.

Practices will be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. from September through February. The first practice is Monday.

WRESTLING

ACWF back on Saturday

The American Championship Wrestling Federation will return to the ring Saturday night at the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Miracle Lane.

The organization’s September event, “Heatwave Havoc” is sure to be action packed as fan-favorite ACWF superstars return to the ring.

Prior to the show, a meet and greet with ACWF superstars will be from 4-6 p.m. The meet and greet is $10 and includes a show ticket.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under.
