RACING

Rain ends third race

The rain started to come down just before Saturday’s race, resulting in a cancelation of the Mother’s Day race at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown.

They will run the same race program Saturday, May 24. If you got an armband, you can use it for the next race.

They will still have the giveaways for Mother’s Day baskets.

From 5-10 p.m. Thursday, the track will have an open practice session at Tri-County for upcoming races at Sugar Creek Raceway and Smoky Mountain Speedway. Pits are $20. Any car can come practice.

Payne lauded by Bulldogs

Former Murphy and Andrews track and field and cross country coach, the late-Keith Payne was honored Saturday on the track at Murphy High School.

Coaches and alumni gathered as they dedicated a memorial to Payne at the track.

Payne coached at Murphy and Andrews, as well as Swain County.

He passed away on Aug. 17, 2024.

FOOTBALL

MHS opener at Western

The 2025 football season will kick off with Murphy High School traveling to Cullowhee to take on Franklin at the Western Carolina University football stadium.

Murphy and Franklin will go head to head Friday, Aug. 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Last season, Franklin handed the Bulldogs their only regular-season loss and the Dogs will be looking for revenge this time around.

This will be the fifth straight season that the Dogs open their schedule against the Panthers.

BASKETBALL

AHS hosts car wash

The Andrews High School girls basketball team will be hosting a car wash Saturday, May 24, starting at 10 a.m.

The car wash will be to raise funds for the team to attend a team camp at Campbell University in June.

The car wash will be held at Town Hall at the West End Plaza in Andrews. It is $10 per vehicle, and donations are both accepted and appreciated.

This is the team’s third annual fundraising car wash, with the goal of sending the team to camp.

Calling out all MHS alumni

Murphy High School will host an alumni football game where the alumni Bulldogs will take on an alumni squad of Swain County Maroon Devils.

The game will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14.

Get a chance to relive one of the biggest rivalries in the history of the Smoky Mountain Conference.

Sheriff hosts fish tourney

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a kid’s fishing day Saturday, May 31 at the Sheriff’s Office Firing Range in Marble.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the event will start at 9 a.m. It will be held rain or shine.

There will be free paint. G&S Bait is providing worms and donating Zebco poles.
