Gentry into state HOF
David Gentry was inducted into the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night in Greensboro.
Gentry was inducted as part of the Class of 2025 alongside Greg Ellis, Nora Lynn Finch, Rollie Geiger, Dale Inman, Bobby Isaac, Cullen Jones, Chester McGlockton, Wendy Palmer Jimmy Raye and Miles Wolff.
The retired Bulldogs head coach won 426 games during his iconic career as a high school coach, including 366 at Murphy, where he won nine state championships.
Gentry is also apart of the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
GOLF
Cats, Dogs make region
On April 24 and April 28, Murphy and Andrews competed in the Smoky Mountain Conference boys golf tournament.
Andrews came in second place after shooting a team total of 767. Murphy shot 102 over par, but didn’t qualify in team standings since they only had three golfers competing.
For Andrews, Logan Shuler finished in sixth place, Brady Queen came in 10th, Tucker Stalcup and Braxton Rickett came in 17th and Boone Parker came in 19th.
For Murphy, Bradey Golden was named the Smoky Mountain Conference Player of the Year. Bradey Golden, Connor Golden and Easton Manuel also qualified for the regionals.
RACING
Next race at track
Cars will be back flingin’ dirt around every turn at Tri-County Racetrack in Brasstown on Saturday night.
Saturday night’s race is Mother’s Day race night at the track. Special events for the mothers in attendance include a raffle for multiple gift baskets and kids handing out carnations.
Pit gates open at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 4 p.m., the drivers meeting is at
6:15 p.m. and hot laps will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Pit tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for kids 11-15 and free for kids 10 and under. Granstand tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for kids 11-15 and free for kids 10 and under.
TRACK
AMS track wins SMC
Middle school track & field teams headed to Swain County for the conference championship, and the Andrews boys brought home the trophy after beating Hayesville by one point.
Elliott Salinas, Korbin Hicks earned wins in their events, getting 10 points each for the team. The 4x100-meter and 4x400m relays got first, getting points for the team.
Many athletes also had top-three and top-five finishes, earning important points for the team.
ATHLETICS
Boosters host tournament
The Murphy High School booster club will be hosting a pickleball tournament at
9 a.m. Saturday at Konehete Veterans Park in Murphy.
Along with the pickleball tournament, they will be hosting cornhole and 3-on-3 basketball tournament.
For pickleball and cornhole, it is $40 per team, while for basketball it is $30 per team.

WRESTLING
New start at ACWF
Fans packed the Peachtree Community Center on Saturday night for the American Championship Wrestling Federation’s May event, “A New Beginning.”
To open the show, American Outlaws defeated Moki and Blue Flame in tag-team action. Then, Mountain Man Jeremy Stiles defeated Kevin Seiber. In a triple-threat match, American Standard defeated Stryker and Gun Metal Gray.
In tag team action before intermission, the ACWF tag team champions retained their titles against the team of Vito and KZ. Before the main event, Flex and Frodo came out and welcomed new manager Kevin Walker. In the main event, Mr. Atlanta 2 retained his ACWF heavyweight title.
The next ACWF event will be Saturday, June 14. The main event is scheduled to be KZ and Vito vs. Flex and Frodo in a lumberjack leather strap match, with eight fans around the ring holding leather belts.
