Senior Games kicking off

The Cherokee/Clay Counties Senior Games will officially begin with their opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Clay County Recreation Center, 333 Ball Park Drive in Hayesville.

The opening games will follow the opening ceremony with the fun walk, football and softball throws, basketball shooting, shot put and discus. Following the games, an opening day awards ceremony will be held to award medals to the top finishers that day.

Registration for the games will be accepted the day of and is $15. The games will continue through Friday, May 23, and will end with the closing ceremony and banquet Saturday, May 31.

GOLF

Dogs earn close win

The Murphy High School boys golf team got a one-stroke win over Andrews at the match on April 15.

Murphy shot 196 (+52) in their team total and Andrews shot 197 (+53). Highlands was also close behind shooting 198 (+54). Nantahala came in fourth place after shooting 230 (+86).

Brady Queen of Andrews and Bradey Golden of Murphy finished tied for first after they both shot 44 (+8). Connor Golden of Murphy came in solo fourth place after shooting 46 (+10) and Andrews’ Boone Parker came in fifth after shooting 47 (+11).

Both teams will look to use the momentum heading into the first round of the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament Thursday at Highlands Falls Country Club in Highlands.

BASEBALL

Cats, Eagles fall Monday

The Andrews and Hiwassee Dam baseball teams were in action April 14 immediately after returning from spring break.

Andrews fell to Union County, Ga., 13-3 on the road. Their three runs came in the top of the fourth innings as Kelby Waldroup, Drew Dartez and Ethan Sutton crossed home plate.

Hiwassee Dam hosted Towns County, Ga., and lost 17-4. The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the second and added one more in the bottom of the fourth. Their runs were scored by Isaiah Crisp, Dalton Kester, Pace Ware and Nick Sorbera.

The Eagles and Wildcats will face off Tuesday in Hiwassee Dam and Thursday, May 1, in Andrews. First pitch for both games is set for 4:30 p.m.

Lady Dogs pick up win

Murphy’s baseball and softball teams were in non-conference action on April 16. The Lady Dogs defeated Franklin and the baseball team fell to Towns County, Ga.

With a late rally, the Lady Dogs defeated Franklin 5-4. They were trailing 4-1 heading into the sixth inning and made it a two-run game. Then with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, they got the big win.

It was a different story on the baseball diamond as the Dogs fell 18-5 to Towns County. The Dogs had offense in bursts with two runs in the second inning and three in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.

The softball team played their final non-conference game against Franklin, but the baseball team will face Rabun Gap-Nacoochee on Thursday and Rosman on Monday with both games at 4:30 p.m. at home.

ATHLETICS

Local alum breaks record

Sarah Pullium, Murphy High School Class of 2021, broke the discus record at UNC-Charlotte on Friday night at the Wake Forest Invitational track meet.

Pullium set the school record then broke it again with a throw of 54.23 meters (177.92 feet). Her record-breaking throw ranks 33rd among all NCAA Division I women.

She also holds the discus record at Murphy with a throw of 140 feet (42.67m), which she set at the Smoky Mountain Conference championship meet in her senior year.

WRESTLING

New start at ACWF

The American Championship Wrestling Federation will return to action with “A New Beginning” on Saturday, May 3, at the Peachtree Community Center, 125 Memory Lane.

The event will continue the fallout from their April 5 action-packed event.

ACWF superstars set to wrestle include American Outlaws Killshot and Axel Freakin’ Gunn, as well as Flex Ferguson and Kevin Seiber. Men of Honor Frodo, Stryker and Mountain Man Jeremy Stiles are set to be in competition. Also wrestling are Vito, American Standard, Robert Starr, KZ Smith and Mr. Atlanta 2.
