HIWASSEE DAM
Cousins two of area’s best
After being named All-Smoky Mountain Conference, cousins Olivia and Payton McNabb were both named All-Western North Carolina by the Asheville Citizen-Times.
The duo started every game for Hiwassee Dam softball this year, which finished 13-4 overall and second in the conference before falling in the second round of the state playoffs.
Payton, a junior, was the team’s starting catcher and hit .577 with one home run and 23 runs batted in. Olivia, a freshman, split time between left field and pitcher and hit .527 with four home runs and 25 RBI, which were both team highs. She also had a 2.83 earned run average and 69 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched.
This is the second straight year the Lady Eagles have had a player named All-Western NC, as Dezeray Adams was named to the team last year.
RALEIGH
Fish for free on the Fourth
As it has been since 1994, anglers of any age will be able to fish for free without a license on July 4, according to a release.
Anglers are required to follow fishing regulations, such as length and daily possession limits as well as bait and tackle restrictions. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission warns anglers that the boating areas will be crowded this weekend, and urges boaters to be patient and courteous.
