Dogs golf goes low
The Murphy boys golf team kicked off its season on March 4 by playing in a match at Chatuge Shores in Hayesville. Murphy shot a total score of 195, tying Robbinsville for the win. Connor Golden shot the lowest score for the Bulldogs with a 43. His brother Bradey was right behind with shooting a 44. Easton Manuel shot a 47, while Abram Twiggs shot a 61 to round out their total of 195. Nantahala also competed, shooting a team score of 295.
JIUJITSU Two earn BJJ stripes
Ty Couchman and Will Wimpey recently earned new stripes to their belt at Murphy Family Brazilian Jiujitsu Center. Couchman, a blue belt, and Wimpey, a white belt, earned stripes by competing various tasks to show their advancement and discipline in BJJ. They received their stripes from Professor Vincent Werner, a fourth-degree black belt who trained at American Top Team.
WRESTLING Spring is underway Wrestlers from Andrews kicked off their spring season by competing in the Highland Challenge for S.W.A.T. Wrestling Club on March 1. Chase Beasley competed in freestyle and folk style wrestling disciplines. In folk style, he came in second. In the championship match, he lost by fall to Bryson McFalls of Mitchell, who was the Western Regional champion. The match was close and tied at eight points each when McFalls got the pin. In freestyle, Beasley came in third place following two losses by fall. Sissy Ashe and Beasley completed in the YONA Championship on March 8. Ashe came in second following a first-round pin, then losing by decision in the championship. Beasley fell in the first round, then got one win in the consolation bracket.
SOFTBALL Ladies fall in 1st game The Andrews varsity softball team kicked off its season with a trip to Asheville to take on the Trailblazers on March 4. The Lady Wildcats lost their season opener 16-0. The Trailblazers were 1-0 before the game In their next game, Andrews will take on Hayesville at home at 4:30 p.m. Friday. On Tuesday, March 18, the Lady Cats will play host to Robbinsville at 4:30 p.m.
ATHLETICS Sign-ups for seniors The Cherokee/Clay Senior Games’ annual athetic competition is coming soon. Early bird registration opened Monday and runs until Sunday. Early registration is $10. Early bird tickets to the banquet are $5 for participants and $15 for guests. Regular registration opens Monday, March 17, and is $15. Banquet tickets are the same price once regular registration opens. The games are set to start with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 26. Following the opening ceremony, the games will begin with the fun walk, softball and football throws, basketball shooting, shot put and discus. Once the opening day games have ended, there will be an awards ceremony for the day’s games. The opening ceremony will be held at the Clay County Recreation Center, 333 Ball Park Drive in Hayesville.
